Dealing with Parkinson's Disease

My father-in-law was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. According to Wikipedia, Parkinson's disease (also known as Parkinson disease or PD) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills, speech, and other functions. Parkinson's disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement (bradykinesia) and, in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement (akinesia). The primary symptoms are the results of decreased stimulation of the motor cortex by the basal ganglia, normally caused by the insufficient formation and action of dopamine, which is produced in the dopaminergic neurons of the brain. Secondary symptoms may include high level cognitive dysfunction and subtle language problems. PD is both chronic and progressive. One of the risks that one has to watch out for when it occurs is that the sufferer might fall and experience fall-related injuries during rigidity episodes. My father-in-law has had a few episodes during his last visit and he and my mother-in-law are seriously considering purchasing a wheel chair to avoid that risk. A doctor friend of ours suggested that there are stores that sell medical equipment in Bambang and we might probably find a good deal on wheel chairs there. We might go there one of these days to check it out for them. Hopefully, we can find one that will suit his needs.

I got noticed!

... in a nice way, anyway. I brought the kids to Kumon last Monday and got to meet one of the moms I haven't seen in a long while. Last time she saw me I was probably 10 pounds or so heavier. She told me I had lost weight and that my face had stretched up a bit. (Boy, did that make my day hahaha!) She asked how I did it and if I had gone on a diet. I told I don't take sodas or soft drinks as much as possible. I also told her it was probably because of ballet. I sometimes teach as a substitute for dh when he can't make it to to his class. No diet pills here. Just a simple equation. More movement=more calories burned. Plus, my flabby arms are definitely smaller than before. (I posted about this a few posts back)

My goal is to go back to my dancing weight, which is like reaching for the moon. My next target area is my tummy. If you've ever been pregnant then this is a definite struggle area. I'll keep you posted if I become successful. :)

Move your body

I recently bought at book for my kids about biology. Its a Grade 10 book but I intend to read it aloud to my 1st grader. We read about mollusks a few days ago. On my own time, I found myself reading this book with some pleasure. I ended up marveling at the jet propulsion of cephalopods (squids and octopuses), the wing construction of birds and the amazing abilities of fish. Considering these and the human body, I realized that animals were made to move. Forget about apidexin reviews. The reason for most of us being overweight is that we have forgotten to move. Most of us live a sedentary lifestyle, lost in cyberspace or in TV land. What's worse is that we do this with a box of chocolates in front of us. It's time for us to do what we were design for. Move your body!

How to get rid of flabby thighs

I recently did an experiment on my flabby arms and did some simple exercises to firm them up an so far so good. (Here's a link to the post : get rid of flabby arms) I can finally see a little muscle definition again although I still have to be faithful in doing my routine. I didn't use any weight loss supplement but I did tone down on the soda and the junk food. Now that I have a little momentum going on I'm targeting my flabby thighs next. :) I have a little routine I do to work on my inner thighs that you might want to try as well. It's a simple step but it's the repetition that counts. I do this while reading or watching the news minus the munching on the junk food. LOL
  • Lie down on your side with knees bent like in an inverted L position with feet touching each other. Lift up the knee that's on top of the other knee as high as you can. Keep the feet together while lifting the knee. Do the same on the other side.
Of course you would always want to consult with your physician whenever starting a new exercise routine just to make sure.

Tailbone Injury

Speaking about children's birthday parties, I had a mishap in that birthday party we attended. It happened during one of those party games that I joined. I rarely join party games and this was one of the few occasions I did. What happened was I was trying to catch a lady who was going to trip and in the process I landed on my tailbone instead. It was so hard that approximately 2 weeks after I still feel the effects of the fall. Should I hire a Morristown personal injury lawyer to sue for damages? I don't think so. It was an accident and nobody wanted it to happen for sure. On the other hand, I have learned to leave these party games alone next time. I'll stick to the hotdogs and the chocolate fountain instead. :)

Dirty water caused by old asbestos pipes

Speaking of mesothelioma, did you know that exposure to asbestos is the only confirmed cause of mesothelioma? I was watching the local news last night and I chanced upon a news item about people complaining about dirty water in a certain province in the Philippines. One of the local health officials said that it might be because the pipes were really old in that area and that they were the only ones who still had asbestos pipes. I read an article today about mesothelioma and how asbestos is the only confirmed cause of this preventable disease. It is a tragedy that many of the corporations or gov't. contractors who manufactured and profited from selling products containing asbestos did not warn of the risks and side-effects of this harmful material. I don't particularly know of any Mesothelioma lawyers who could defend any complainants in that province . Hopefully, they wouldn't need any and that the government will address this situation promptly.

Lower Back Injury

It's been a couple of weeks since I sustained an injury on my lower back and the pain although it has subsided much still is bothersome to me. I landed on my tailbone during a parlor game at a children's birthday party and it's been as slow recovery. Of course I'm glad it's not as bad as a case of mesothelioma but still I might need to see a doctor this weekend to find out how to get some relief. Right now it's just pain relievers and some stretching exercises that are helping me cope. Hopefully, the doctor won't prescribe any steroids again this time.

Medical Malpractice

Our son wasn't feeling yesterday. He was fine in the morning prior to ballet class but later on he felt warm to the touch and it became a full-grade fever late last night. This morning his temperature hit 39 degrees so dh and I decided that he needed to be brought to the doctor. With increasing reports of Influenza A H1N1 in the city, I think it's better to be safe than sorry.

Our family pediatrician's clinic is more than 20 kms away and although it is quite far, we've learned our lesson well not to sacrifice the convenience of nearby clinics for expertise. Our little girl was misdiagnosed last year at a nearby hospital and we were so stressed with how they handled her case. After more than four-days without improvement, we pulled her out and transferred her to our family pedia in the middle of the night even if his clinic was so far away. We just trust him to take care of our kids so much that hiring a high-caliber Rochester medical malpractice attorney is highly unlikely. Not all doctors are created equal and I am not going to risk my kids' safety no matter what. Makes me wonder what really went on in Michael Jackson's last few days...

Idol News-Mandisa Transformation

I listen to internet radio via iTunes when I do my computer stuff. Most of the time I listen to The Healing Streams but the other day I tried to switch stations just to break the monotony. So I tried K-love and at that time they had Mandisa on, an American Idol contestant in one of the previous seasons of AI. She was sharing her experiences about her struggle with weight loss and how she started overcoming it. If I remember correctly, she said she had lost around 80 lbs. already. That's a lot! It takes a whole lot more than the best weight loss pills to keep that off and it's inspiring how she continues to overcome her weight challenge. I probably should read more about her story to find out how she did it.

Increasing Metabolism

I brought the kids to Kumon class today and I was quite happy with one of the teacher's comments to me. She said that I was losing weight. I was happy to hear that because that has been one of my goals since my kids started doing ballet. I don't have a regular workout routine but I started increasing my physical activities - housework became a calorie-burning source, commuting (a lot of walking happens to and from terminals). I also started tapering off unnecessary high calorie food like soda and chips. I haven't really given it all up but I only consume enough to satisfy my craving and that's it. Plus the hubby has been conscientiously following a daily menu according to the food pyramid. All these are factors that probably contributed to an increase in my metabolism and therefor has resulted in a drop in my weight. How happy can I be? This route is a slow but sure way to being fit and healthy not just for me but for us as a family. Diet supplements are fine but understanding how your body works and knowing what to do to keep it fit and healthy will yield better results in the long run.

Eating right!

Our unexpected vacation made all of us in the family loose a lot of way. For Tes and I, it was great! Much better than diet pills. But for the kids it was quite disturbing. We also had to rethink our nutritional strategy for the kids ensuring they have the right stuff to resist infection. For starters, we decided to buy fresh food from the market. In the past few days, I have been grilling fish and chicken not from the supermarket. Aside from the freshness, its quite cheaper also. You also get to buy fresh greens to balance out the meat. So...to market...to market... wil it ever be!

What makes you heavier? - Muscle or Fat

Speaking of weight issues, there was a time (sadly, too long ago boohoo) that I was fit and fab. Well, maybe not the fab. That was during my dancing days. I remember starting out really heavy especially in the hip and thigh area and I tried lots of fat burners, shakes, creams and so on just to lose the pounds. Every time I went on the scale, I often wondered why there was so little difference in my weight. I realized later that it wasn't really about the numbers on the scale. I thought that I wasn't losing my fat because there was only minimal change in terms of the numbers but I later understood that I was losing weight and at the same time gaining muscle as well. So if you get discouraged that nothing is happening to you after all those exercises, feel your arms, your thighs or your abs - you might have put on some muscle.

Yo-yo diets

I was watching the Insider yesterday and one of the hot topics they had was about Oprah and her weight. Oprah said that she now weighed 200 lbs. and the cover of her O magazine showed two photos of her - the lighter version and the heavier Oprah. I sometimes get confused about how much she really weighs because the Oprah shows shown here do not follow the airtimes in the US. The new episodes and the re-runs are shown randomly so one day she's thin and then the next time she's not. (take note- the Heidi Klum accent LOL) It is kinda funny if you think about it because  the TV turns into a diet pill of sorts for her where she can look fit and trim as long as they don't show the times when she puts back the weight.  Instant weight loss without the fuss. :)

Beauty or Health

On TV, magazines, and the internet you see the ideal lady having a slender whistle bait figure . This drives hordes of young ladies looking for Anoretix or some other lose- weight- quick drug. Is beauty intrinsically associated with a slender body ? Or is this a projection of Hollywood's worldview? Why should we try to lose weight? The primary reason should be to keep our bodies functioning right. Our bodies weren't designed to be weigh 300lbs. No wonder we have back and leg problems! No wonder we have high blood pressure! Its all about proper stewardship of our bodies and turning away from a lifestyle of greed and gluttony.

My favorite aisle in the supermarket

Did you know that my favorite aisle in the supermarket is the toiletries section where all the shampoos, soaps and skin care products are. I remember when we were in the US and I was still pregnant with my first child, I would take my sweet time browsing through the all the products and reading all the claims on the labels.

One of the baby products that I really wished for my soon to arrive baby back then was the Aveeno baby care line.  It's definitely one of those products you need to have on your baby shower wishlist aside from all those other cutesy baby stuff. My kids are no longer little babies (just bigger babies to me) but I love the Aveeno line and if you are expecting a little bundle of joy I know your baby will love it too.

Navy Seals Fitness anyone?

Like I've posted a while back, hubby is currently fascinated with this Navy Seals Fitness Training Program. He's also into all these mixed martial arts like pankration, muay thai, krav maga and UFC shows so he and my kids (yup even my little girl lol) have these sparring bouts in between commercials. It's like having Vin Diesel - "The Pacifier" in the house. lol  Who needs cheap diet pills when you can do star jumps or jumping jacks - navy counts? The con - our small house cannot take it! Either we get a bigger house or I just get rid of all our furnishings altogether. Yikes! I need to get out of the way now! :)

Liver Lover

Did you know that the liver is one the largest and most important organs of your body? Without it you cannot digest food and absorb nutrients, get rid of toxic substances from your body or stay alive. Whatever you eat, drink, breathe and absorb through your skin (yikes, what about all those beauty creams that we slather on our skin) eventually reaches the liver.

Can you imagine all those oily, quivering pork fat and all the other high toxicity foods our livers process not just in small portions but in supersize- it, go-big proportions each meal, three times or more a day? I've read that the liver is very resilient in the face of liver problems and it can even regenerate lost cells in a few weeks. But that doesn't mean we can abuse this wonderful organ that does so much to cleanse our system because it isn't indestructible.

Some of the well-known liver ailments are fatty liver which comes from excessive alcohol consumption. This can lead later on to alcoholic hepatitis like Hepatitis A,B and C. Worse, it could lead to something irreversible like cirrhosis of the liver. Wouldn't it be logical to think that we need a regular liver cleanse and give our liver a little more TLC?  Think about it.  Be a Liver Lover.

Diet Pills or Exercise? which one are you?

I have been trying to get back on track when it comes to physical fitness. Although hubby doesn't have a problem with how I look, I often tell him that I need to do it for me and for my own self-esteem. My metabolism has slowed down considerably after giving birth to my last child (which has been 5 years already) and I have been bugging hubby to buy me one of those fat burning pills shown on tv all the time. I have tried taking those protein capsule food supplements like Arginine and Carnitine before and I know that it helped me a lot during my dancing days. My convincing powers aren't strong enough, I guess. Of course, before I took those I read a lot of materials and diet pill reviews to make sure I knew how they would affect my body. If  you are not sure, please do not self-prescribe.

So nowadays, hubby is hooked on this Navy Seals Fitness Training and dead set on making us (myself and the two kids) his "baby" Seals. Thinking about it is already making me tired (whew!). I did tell him once that I wanted to be like Demi Moore when she played G.I. Jane. lol
Of course, I wouldn't go as far as shaving my head you know.  On second thought, it is kinda hot now hmmmm.....
