Viewing a Solar Eclipse

Today a partial solar eclipse was visible over the Philippines. Had our schedules been better we would have sat on outdoor cushions and looked at the sun's reflection on a basin of water. This is the right way to observe this phenomenon as its high contrast could damage our eyes. Another way would be to look through welding goggles. Film negatives don't give enough polarization to protect our eyes. Lastly, we could view an eclipse through a pin hole. Poke a small hole on a piece of paper and put it between the sun and another sheet that serves as a screen. You should be able to see a small image of the sun in the screen. Until the next eclipse...
